The stories behind the art:
exploring UCA’s online graduate showcase

This month saw the launch of the 2025 Gradshows, a celebration of creativity that sees all three UCA campuses transformed by exhibitions of work by final year students.

17 June 2025

Alongside this, we also launched our online Gradshow website with work submitted by the graduating students.

All students have had the opportunity to upload their work, and we have had submissions from a wide range of courses: Games Design to Ceramics, Architecture to Fashion, here’s just a few stories from our online showcase.

Good Morning, Good Night

Wei Qi Tan - Illustration BA (Hons)

Good Morning, Good Night, by Illustration BA (Hons) student Wei Qi Tan, is a concertina book that confronts the realities of old age

It showcases the daily lives of elderly Singaporeans and explores themes of life and death, the quiet disappearance of elderly people and their traditions.

[The book ranges from] the quiet happiness they find in their slow lives to the struggles they experience in their golden years, leading up to their final breath.

NOCTIS

Aman Kumar, Archicture BA (Hons)

As part of his research on Porto, Architecture BA (Hons) student Aman Kumar, noted that significant light pollution severely limited the visibility of stars in the night sky.

With this in mind, Aman decided to explore creating an astronomy museum that would open the skies up to stargazers, students, astrophotographers and more.

The building includes multiple dark rooms, each serving a unique purpose within the museum, along with a luna garden and south-facing bright spaces that make use of the daylight sun.

MotionMATE

Michelle Stannard - Product & Furniture Design BA (Hons)

Michelle Stannard pulled from her personal experiences when developing her Product & Furniture Design BA (Hons) final project.

MotionMATE is an independence-restoring product for powerchair users that allows them to reach for their bag without the need for assistance.

The bag and rail prototypes have been developed with sustainability in mind, with the bags being crafted from recycled backpacks.

Echoes of Edo

Veslie Smith, Fashion Design BA (Hons)

Echoes of Edo is a Fashion Design BA (Hons) project by Veslie Smith that explores their identity and cultural heritage of Edo State, Nigeria.

Veslie developed a unique print inspired by Ivie, highly-symbolic coral beads traditionally worn by Edo people, that captured the elegance, pride and cultural significance of Edo attire.

I sought out the unfiltered truth of my heritage. I asked my parents detailed questions and listed to the stories shared during my grandmother's funeral ceremonies in Nigeria... These conversations and experiences allowed me to dive deeper into my culture and bring it to life through fabric, form, and design.
